The Aspen Times reports that the state of Wyoming is cleared to hold a bison hunt at the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and up to 300 bison will be killed this fall. The Fund for Animals' 1998 lawsuit forced the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct an environmental study, and when it was completed, the agency asked the state to conduct a hunt. However in order to end the lawsuit, the federal government was to pay $60,000 in legal expenses to The Fund. Due to Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal's call to Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, the government agreed to pay, and a federal judge signed off on the final settlement. An attorney for The Fund indicates that The Fund does not support the bison hunt on the refuge but acknowledged that there was nothing further that could be done to prevent it.

The Celebrity News Service reports that Ringling Bros. Circus's delay tactics are over, and they will now head to court to defend allegations of abusing their Asian elephants. The Fund for Animals and other animal protection organizations have filed a lawsuit against the circus for allegedly violating the Endangered Species Act.
